Linux Training Survey Results* - April 2004

  • A net 100% of contacts reported increased Linux training activity in April 2004 compared to April 2003. This is an increase over our February 2004 survey when 86% of contacts reported increased activity.
    • A net 86% of contacts anticipate increased training activity for Linux within the next three months.
  • Contacts report that Linux has begun taking away market share from Windows. Over half of contacts cited specific interest in migrating from Windows to Linux.
    • This is a deviation from prior trends where Linux adoption primarily affected UNIX market share.
    • Many contacts reported that customers are "frustrated" with Windows and that "it's hard to find [companies] not interested in Linux."
    • In the embedded system space, contacts report that Micro C Linux [uClinux] is gaining favor over VX Works and Windows.
  • Contacts report very strong Linux training activity in the government sector, defense, medical, telecom, finance, and industrial controls.
  • A large majority (86%) of contacts reported that Linux training has been focused on system development over system administration.
    • From this, we infer that customers are developing new products and services instead of maintaining old ones.
  • As Novell/SuSE (NOVL) continues to define its role within the Linux marketplace, contacts report that the addition of another player in the field has strengthened the market and made Red Hat a more viable company.
    • Contacts report that Red Hat and Novell are not seen as competitors, but complements.
    • Red Hat and Novell are working toward common goals that will ultimately benefit the customer.
  • More so than in previous surveys, contacts report that Linux is making some inroads into the desktop arena.
    • In previous surveys, Linux strength had been focused primarily in the server arena.
    • In our most recent survey, contacts reported that Novell/SuSE and Linspire (formerly Lindows) have gained exposure as viable competitors in the desktop field.
